It is recommended that prophylaxis be performed every 6 months as a preventive measure to promote good oral health. However, it is usually recommended that periodontitist sufferers have periodontal maintenance cleanings every 3-4 months. It should be noted that periodontal disease (gum disease) cannot be completely reversed but periodontal maintenance is one of the tools used to effectively halt its progression.
