Fillings
We are a mercury-free dental practice. However, many people still have silver (mercury) fillings from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye and silver fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Tooth colored (composite) restorations create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are aesthetically pleasing and very strong, thanks to new bonding technologies.
Disadvantages of Silver fillings:
Silver fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak or break. This results in the tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts, and can split. Silver fillings consist of 50% mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums. Fortunately, silver fillings can safely be replaced with tooth colored (composite) restorations.
Replacing Silver Fillings with a Tooth Colored Restoration:
Silver fillings can be replaced with tooth colored restorations. The silver filling is removed and the tooth is then cleaned, bonded, and a tooth colored filling is placed. This rids the tooth of the grayish look, which is the stain from the corroding silver filling. Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, in addition to being stronger and more protected!
Advantages of Tooth Colored (Composite) Restorations:
There are many advantages to tooth colored restorations. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.
After Composite Fillings:
When an anesthetic has been used, your lips, tongue and cheek may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid hot beverages and chewing until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your lip, tongue or cheek while you are numb. You may chew with your composite fillings as soon as the anesthetic wears off since they are fully set when you leave the office. It is normal to experience some hot, cold and/or pressure sensitivity after your appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. To alleviate tenderness take Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen or Aspirin as directed on the label. If your bite feels uneven, you have persistent pain or pressure sensitivity beyond a few days, or if hot or cold sensitivity increase, contact our office at 208-455-9498..
